Swimming Feeling, the brand new album from Chicago recording engineer Seth Engel’s band Choices, is out immediately. As heard on lead single “Toast,” the challenge presents an attention-grabbing mix of rock subgenres. I hear some power-pop in there, a little bit of mathy emo, a smidge of fuzzed-out DIY crunch that jogs my memory of Ovlov and early Foo Fighters, some pensive clean-lined indie rock within the Dying Cab vein, perhaps even a hint of roots rock? No matter you wish to name these things, it’s good: stuffed with nifty interlocking guitar riffs and winding tune buildings and choruses that sneak up on you. Beneath, you may faucet into that Swimming Feeling your self.
