After spending the day with Alex Somers in his studio in Reykjavík whereas making my first album in January 2017, I walked again by the heavy snow to my hostel. I sat down on one of many eight bunk beds and wrote “Stranger.” The tune has lived in lots of varieties since, and I’ve at all times needed to discover a residence for it. In certainly one of Melbourne’s many lockdowns, I ultimately rewrote the monitor – I bought my buddy, JT Bates, so as to add some drums within the midwest.
Payten goes on to say about “Customer”:
I’ve spent quite a lot of my life driving lengthy distances. Returning to a chapter of life solely to really feel like a customer, a stranger to your individual expertise. This tune started sitting at my dad and mom’ piano, I constructed the association over six or seven months. Because the tune got here collectively, a phrase I had come throughout circled round my head: the literal that means of the overused and under-appreciated “nostalgia” – the sorrow of homecoming.
